The excavation at Vindolanda unearthed various items, including shoes, leather goods, pottery, and more than 400 Roman shoes. These findings shed light on the diverse community living at Vindolanda during that period.

The discoveries offer a glimpse into the daily lives of individuals who resided within the fort at Vindolanda. Dr. Andrew Birley, CEO and Director of Excavations at Vindolanda Trust, emphasized the significance of these findings as they bridge a remarkable span of time and offer a deep understanding of conflicting communities from different historical periods.

The volume and variety of discoveries, particularly at Vindolanda, stand out due to the sheer number of Roman shoes and other artifacts found compared to other locations from the Roman Empire era.

The discovery of stylish and well-made shoes, belts, children's footwear, and other accessories around AD 212 indicates a remarkable sense of fashion and sophistication among the people of that time. These findings, especially the children's shoes, evoke the imagination of ancient Roman life, akin to a scene from an Adriatic Coast town.

Sonja Gallaway, the Communication Manager of The Vindolanda Trust, noted that the exceptional quality of these shoes has greatly enriched their collection. It's not just about the great aesthetics or the artifacts themselves; rather, it's the inherent value that Vindolanda's Decisionate collection conveys through its myriad items, enabling a direct connection with the past—a reflection preserved vividly despite nearly 2000 years having passed.

The shoes are currently undergoing conservation on-site, specifically adapted to cope with the challenges of finding. The Vindolanda Trust's Curator, Barbara Birley, mentioned that the large number of footwear items presented some challenges for our lab but with the help of dedicated volunteers and staff, the preservation and process are well underway. Barbara Birley further stated, "The Vindolanda Trust is committed to the excavation, preservation, and public display of its findings although each shoe costs between £80 and £100 to conserve."

This commitment to preserving and exhibiting these discoveries is a testament to the dedication of The Vindolanda Trust despite the costs associated with conserving each individual shoe.
